about the possibility of someone stealing our ride, or getting into an accident. Paying those pesky premiums just adds insult to the fear of injury. The only salve for a forehead sore from the brick wall that is car insurance is saving money on it. Here are five apps (and then some) to help you do just that.

All the big ones have them, though their ability to save you money is questionable. Why would a company with shareholders want to give you a way to decrease its revenues? To make up for the possible conflict with this post's stated goal, you get seven apps in the space of one:

This social driving app uses information submitted by its users to generate maps that use icons to show locations of traffic, accidents, and speed traps. While the ethics of that last one are hazy at best, you will save money on your car insurance if you cut down on the moving violations. Waze even has an option to let your fellow Wazers know when you've found a good deal on gas--nothing unethical about that, unless you own an oil rig. This app is available for all platforms.

These apps use your smartphone's GPS and video camera to simultaneously record your route, speed, and whatever the lens sees. Mount the phone on the dashboard for a front-facing camera just like the police use, or turn it around for reaction shots (Don't get caught digging for gold!). The data captured during an accident could be used to keep your insurance rates from going up, or possibly aid you in a civil trial. Unlike a plane's black box, it is up to you whether or not to let anyone else access this data, wink wink, nudge nudge. This app is available as the AutoGuard BlackBox for Android and the iCarBlackBox for iOS.
4. AAA Roadside If you are a AAA member, you are already saving money on your car insurance; this app can save you frustration and time (and after all, time is money) by minimizing the response time during a breakdown. This app is available for iPhone and Android.
5. DriveSafe.ly The best way to save money on insurance and repairs is to avoid getting into accidents. This app increases your attention to the road by reading your emails and texts out loud. It does not eliminate the distractions that such communications create--that would require the unthinkable act of turning off your phone--but every little bit helps. The app is available for all platforms and is free for download, but the service costs $3.99/month for an individual and $9.99/month for a family plan.
