Why YouTube Asks Users to Use Google + Profile while Commenting

YouTube has recently acquired the infamous identity of being an emotional dumping ground for racists, religious fanatics, and people who enjoy
bullying complete strangers for one reason or the other. By granting users the freedom to post their videos, it has in turn granted radical elements the opportunity to hurl crass comments at will. And they do it without any sense of guilt or remorse. Why? That’s because they are safely tucked under the mask of anonymity. But now, internet’s conscience keepers have at last managed to bring in some sense of accountability to the conversations and comments posted on the internet.

YouTube is finally following up on the assurance of revamping its commenting system completely. YouTube is urging, rather strongly, its users and commenter’s to use their real full name instead of a pseudonym. The site asks users if it can display the name and photo linked to their Google+ profile, assuming that the users have a Google+ account. Google also gives you the option of reviewing your content before displaying your full name. And when we say reviewing your content, it includes past content too. You get to decide if you want to be associated with any of your previous comments. Even after reviewing the content if you are still unsure, you can switch back to your username. By linking your comments to your Google+ profile, those venting their anger on YouTube may want to reconsider what they post hereafter.

For those who don’t want to reveal their original identities, Google forces them to select a reason. Strangely, the option of wanting to remain anonymous has been left out from the list of reasons.

By making users link their Google+ profile name and picture to their comment or post, YouTube is making it more difficult for users to post hurtful comments. It still remains to be seen if users will reveal their real names or revel in the cloak of anonymity and continue to dish out hurtful comments.

Meanwhile, it’s time we looked at both sides of the coin. When cringing and crying at hateful comments may become things of the past, users under repressive political and social environment who use YouTube as a positive tool to spread their message may find it difficult or outright impossible to publish their full name.

In short Google is asking you to quit being anonymous and enter in to the limelight. Be proud of your identity; don’t hide behind the cloak of invisibility. Let’s hope that YouTube will once again become a site for decent conversations and exchange of views where your ideas and feelings are not trampled upon.

iPhone sales help fuel worldwide smartphone numbers

Thanks to record breaking sales figures by Apple for the iPhone 4S by the end of 2011 there was almost a 50% increase in the number of devices up on the previous year. The research by Gartner Inc. claims the figures rose during the final quarter of 2011 thanks to the 30 million plus iPhone 4S' sold by Apple. The results led to Apple becoming the third largest vendor of mobile phones in the world. They also became the top smartphone vendor, with nearly a quarter of global sales in the fourth quarter. Over the rest of 2011, Apple took a fifth of the share of the smartphone market. The UK and wider Western Europe along with North America were the driving forces for the figures, says Gartner. Up until the launch of the iPhone 4S sales were a little slow. Suddenly the spiked as we all ran out to buy the new device. Worldwide, mobile device sales figures reached 476.5 million in the fourth q...

The Concepts of Social Networking in Today's World

In today’s high tech world, networking occurs as much on computers as in “real life” social situations. Social media has opened up a vast new frontier for people to connect with others. Before the advent of social media, people generally networked at social gatherings like mixers, fundraising galas and similar events. Of course, such “face-to-face” networking is still important and common, but social media allows possibilities that did not exist before. One of the problems with older networking models is that often the same people showed up at all the events. The percentage of the population that is active in community events tends to be rather low. On the other hand, almost everyone these days uses social media. Vast reach of social networking According to the latest stats, Facebook alone has more than 900 million active users worldwide with the number continuing to grow. Twitter and Google+ also have large numbers of active users that cross all demographic categories. ...
