Convert Used Mac AS New as a Brand New and Istall OS X

So you've bought yourself a Mac--congratulations! Before you start pounding out the next great novel or posting kitten pics on Facebook, take
an hour or two to get your machine in secure working order.

Even if the seller claims to have reformatted the hard drive, you should perform this operation yourself to ensure that you are working with a clean slate.

  1. Insert the OS X install disk into the Mac's CD/DVD drive; if the seller did not include these disks, you can buy them.
  2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key, which forces it to start using the OS on the DVD instead of the one on the hard drive.
  3. From the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. Select the hard drive from the choices and Erase it.
  4. Do select one of the Security Options.
  5. Run the OS X installer from the CD/DVD.

Setting it Up

Once the OS has installed, the Setup Assistant will launch. This utility allows you to personalize the computer. Entering Registration Information may take a while; make sure the information is accurate, as changing it later on requires multiple steps.

All versions of OS X require multiple user accounts. The first account you set up will have Admin access, giving it permissions to install/uninstall software and make changes to the system.

Internet and Network Setup varies depending on your existing home setup. If your access has been set up according to your providers' instructions, find those instructions to complete this step.

If you have an existing email account, enter that information when prompted. When setup is done, you will be presented with a fresh Mac desktop. From here, you can install software, tweak more options, and do all those things you dreamed of doing on a Mac.
