8 Reasons to Use VoIP in Your Small Business

As a small business owner, where does saving expenses rank on your list of important things to do? For many individuals running businesses,
that question would be an easy one to answer. In order to save money, however, cost-effective planning is a necessity.

One area where costs can be cut, time can be saved, and effectiveness in the workplace can be increased is with VoIP.

For those who have not dialed-in to what VoIP is, it simply means Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP), a technology that allows employers and their  workers to make and receive calls through data networks. Instead of the better-known  phone services, which channel analog signals like the sound of one's voice over copper wires, VoIP converts these sounds to digital form first, allowing them to be sliced, diced, packaged, and routed via a digital network.

Due to the fact that VoIP technology uses the same thinking that's behind data networking, and permits the usage of the same networks used by computers, voice  traffic can also be transferred via the Internet. What the business owner ends up with is reduced cost of voice communications while achieving creative combinations of both services to put new applications to use.

So, would VoIP be a good fit for your small business?

If the following advantages to using VoIP work for you, then it probably makes sense to dial in to what you have been missing out on.

VoIP can help your business:

1. See significant reductions in the expense of communications, especially when  dealing with interstate or international communication.

2. Make and receive calls from various devices, such as a dedicated phone, your PC  through a software-based phone, or even a mobile phone that offers VoIP capabilities.

3. Make it less cumbersome to add extensions to your phone. You can also provide a  local number or extension for all your employees without added costs or cabling.

4. Be more productive and efficient by giving workers the ability to receive and make calls anywhere with a data connection. Employees can use their office network so that  a single device like a computer or a smart fixed or mobile phone can handle everything  including email, chat, messages, faxes, and more. VoIP can also be put into play as a  tool for real-time collaboration along with video conferencing and screen sharing.

5. Employ presence technologies that are a standard feature with VoIP phones and  VoIP communication systems. The technology can tell colleagues about your presence  or give you details on the status and whereabouts of your workers.

6. Employ intelligence into how your calls will be handled, including providing automatic  call routing based on the number, time of day, etc; offering an interactive voice  response when a call comes through, such as voice prompts that guide callers; call  reporting; and additional features.

7. Offer multimedia assistance by permitting you to send more than simply voice data  over a VoIP system. You can also send images, videos, paperwork, along with other  needed files to your employees or partners when you converse with them. This is a benefit if you need to send accounts or other important paperwork to a person outside the principal business office.

8. Meet the needs of growth over time. As your company expands, you need to increase your telephone systems to maintain records, something that can oftentimes be a very expensive process. Now, by using VoIP, you can form unlimited phone numbers and extensions within the office, even between the branch offices. When all is said and done, you end up saving the business money.

While VoIP may not be for every small business, it is plain to see that business owners can be connected to some great features when they are dialed in to VoIP.

Time to Think about Time

This is a guest post by Isabella . The Millennium Bug seems like a long, distant memory, but in the late 1990s, the Y2K bug was sending fear and panic among network administrators, governments and businesses alike. Cash machines were expected to start dishing out dollars like fruit machines, high interest current accounts would empty, planes would fall from the sky and the world was going to plunge back into the dark ages, as every computer system failed. Okay, things didn’t seem to work out to be that bad. Few if any major computer meltdowns occurred, and the world moved on. The threat of the Millennium Bug was quite simply caused by a lack of foresight by computer manufacturers and programmers. Many computer programs only bothered to store the year in two decimal places, which meant that come the year 2000, a lot of timestamps would go from 99 to 00, essentially making the computer believe it was the year 1900. The debate was never settled whether the Y2K bug was just a damp sq...

Company Takes on Social Media Background Checks for You

There was a day and age where job applicants only had to concern themselves with what was on their resumes and pretty much nothing else. In today's Internet age, however, social media is a big factor and is becoming even bigger as people look for work in the challenging economy. Whether it is what one perceives as an innocent picture or comment that was meant in jest, what individuals say on their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ accounts, and other social media sites is being more closely monitored. According to one CareerBuilder survey of approximately 2,000 hiring managers and human resources professionals, 37% of HR managers reported using social media sites to attain more information on prospective candidates as part of the background checks process. Meanwhile, another 11% said they would be doing likewise soon. For those businesses that may just be starting out or have been around for a while but are newer to social media, social media background checks need to be d...
