Operating and Maintaining a Diesel Water Pump

Water Pump Basics

Water pumps are a critical component to supplying needed services for people and businesses. Without them, it would be harder to:

  • -Provide clean water for personal use.

  • -Improve sanitation services.

  • -Remove water from flooded areas.

  • -Maintain public utility and safety programs.

  • -Complete construction projects.

  • -Transport goods and services.

  • -Irrigate crops.

There are a number of types of water pumps available for these uses, the most basic kind being treadle pumps which are manually powered. Ram pumps operate using the power of water combined with the force of gravity to help water flow. Most industrialized countries, however, use electric or diesel water pumps which are more efficient and consistent when moving water through a system.

Diesel Water Pumps

Using a diesel water pump will vary depending on the task at hand. Commercial ones come in a wide range of sizes and are found in vehicles, sewage plants, cooling generators, sump pumps, agricultural irrigation systems, firetruck pumpers, electrical generators and construction equipment. Smaller pumps in diesel engines act to cool down engine parts while in operation. Larger diesel pumps transport waste water into contained areas, pump water up from one level to the next, or drain water and other fluids out of one environment and move them to another.

Diesel water pumps use a diesel fuel engine to create centrifugal force that spins the water around and moves it through a hose or pipe connected to the pump. Pumps can be stationary but are often portable for convenience of use. Since inefficient pumps cost time and money, it is important to periodically check their work output by measuring how much fuel the pump is using compared to the volume of fluids it is moving within a certain time period.

Correct Operation and Maintenance of a Diesel Water Pump

Correct operation of any water pump is directly related to how it is maintained. Manufacturer's instructions are always the first place to check for directions about appropriate operation and maintenance for any specific pump. In general, however, there are some basic operation guidelines to follow:

  1. -Before starting the engine, make sure that all fuel, oil and water levels are checked and topped off if they are low. Also check any moving parts that need to be lubricated manually to ensure smooth operation.

  2. -Work in a well ventilated area as carbon monoxide fumes are a byproduct of diesel engines.

  3. -Check all belts and hoses to make sure they in good condition. If these fail the pump will not run.

  4. -Ensure the hoses are properly attached and vented to the appropriate location or container.

  5. -Watch the oil pressure and fuel level once the system is running. Stop immediately if they fluctuate greatly from normal to check for leaks. Running a diesel water pump under these conditions could ruin the pump.

  6. -Keep a log book of how much fuel and oil is used, how long the diesel water pump is in operation, and note any other unusual conditions that could affect performance. These notes are invaluable to analyze any future problems.

  7. -After operation, clean the diesel water pump of any dust or other contaminants that may build up and prevent it from properly working. This is especially true in dusty, windy environments. Air and oil filters should also be changed according to manufacturer's specifications.

A diesel water pump will last a long time when properly operated and maintained.

Time to Think about Time

This is a guest post by Isabella . The Millennium Bug seems like a long, distant memory, but in the late 1990s, the Y2K bug was sending fear and panic among network administrators, governments and businesses alike. Cash machines were expected to start dishing out dollars like fruit machines, high interest current accounts would empty, planes would fall from the sky and the world was going to plunge back into the dark ages, as every computer system failed. Okay, things didn’t seem to work out to be that bad. Few if any major computer meltdowns occurred, and the world moved on. The threat of the Millennium Bug was quite simply caused by a lack of foresight by computer manufacturers and programmers. Many computer programs only bothered to store the year in two decimal places, which meant that come the year 2000, a lot of timestamps would go from 99 to 00, essentially making the computer believe it was the year 1900. The debate was never settled whether the Y2K bug was just a damp sq...

Company Takes on Social Media Background Checks for You

There was a day and age where job applicants only had to concern themselves with what was on their resumes and pretty much nothing else. In today's Internet age, however, social media is a big factor and is becoming even bigger as people look for work in the challenging economy. Whether it is what one perceives as an innocent picture or comment that was meant in jest, what individuals say on their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ accounts, and other social media sites is being more closely monitored. According to one CareerBuilder survey of approximately 2,000 hiring managers and human resources professionals, 37% of HR managers reported using social media sites to attain more information on prospective candidates as part of the background checks process. Meanwhile, another 11% said they would be doing likewise soon. For those businesses that may just be starting out or have been around for a while but are newer to social media, social media background checks need to be d...
