Use Of Braille In The Phone For The Blind Gives An Edge To The Users

Braille, named after Louis Braille the Frenchman who created it in 1820s is a tactile system of writing. This is generally written on the embossed paper and due to the refreshable displays, this can be used to read a computer screen or that of other devices. For the visually impaired and the blinds, this system has posed to be the independent style of writing. To aid the blind users, developers have come up with Smartphone that uses braille that will unleash a world of communication and fun to the visually impaired. This is considered to be a breakthrough in the field of technology and communication.

Different form of interaction

Smartphone has unfolded various benefits to the users through the use of different features and applications. Owing to the use of the braille the blind users can also experience the same level of fun and explore new areas but with different means of interaction. Smartphone based on this technology has a braille display and there are pins embedded on the screen that can go up and down so that the user can fathom the information that is displayed on the screen. These pins form words based on the braille style of writing, and user can read through their touch.

Technology used in this phone

You must be wondering what differentiates this phone, or how to send across a message or email to the recipient of this phone. Well, the answer is simple the difference lies in the structure of the phone, instead of using a glass panel as in the phones with touchscreen the screen of this phone has depressions or pins. You can send regular mails and messages to these phones and based on the dots that appear on the screen, the users decipher the message that is displayed there. Technology that is used in this phone is also referred as the Sharpe Memory Alloy where after the use a metal gets back into its original form.

Mechanism of the phone

The pins that used in this phone lay beneath the screen and they move up and down to form words as per the braille style. When a message is send, this phone will decipher the same and convert it into the braille words. The pins then move as per the message that is displayed. This mechanism is based on a concept known as haptic touchscreen. The other features of this phone are similar to that of the normal Smartphone. Thus browsing the net and gathering information is easy with this phone for the blinds.

Difference with others

Presently the various phone for the blind that are going rounds are those which can convert data to voice commands or translates the gestures and the touches to similar commands. This phone is quite opposite to those, as here the main emphasis is on the touch and not on the speech part. Be it deciphering a message or an email, all you have to do it is through the touch on the pins. This can also be termed as a refreshable display for braille that will only show text.

Advanced version in pipeline

It is believed that the developer of this phone initiated this process based on the constant interaction with the non-tech savvy people. This phone is in its initial phase. Now you can get the basic features like, adding contact to the phonebook and other easy tasks. On correctly completing tasks, there will be a vibration that denotes the completion of the task. It is expected in the upgraded versions that images, figures, games, maps and other items will also be converted with the use of height maps technology. Users can also feel these in the future and understand the visual emotions.

Author Bio: Dan McCullum wants to buy a phone for his blind brother. He wants to purchase a new phone for the blind that uses braille, where with touch on the depression, you can understand the text and information.
