Keeping a Clean and Safe Office Space

Workplace safety involves a lot more than carefully placed furniture and first aid kits. Keeping your office clean and tidy has a huge impact on the safety of your work environment. While piles of paper and stray materials may seem harmless, they can quickly become quite hazardous. With this in mind, here are some tips for keeping your small business clean and safe:

Paper

When working in a busy office, it does not take long for a few stray pieces of paper to form a heaping pile on a table or desk. In addition to being unsightly, a messy office can also raise stress levels and poses a serious fire hazard. You can eliminate this hazard by placing paper recycling bins around the office. Be sure to place one near each copier for easy access. For additional security, you can also use paper-only shred bins in lieu of the recycling bins.

Rest Room Sanitation

Rest rooms are some of the most frequented spaces in an office. For this reason, it is imperative that they are sanitized at least once a day. This will include removing all paper litter, cleaning the floors and restocking supplies. Soap, paper towels and bath tissue should be available at all times. If you do not have any staff members designated solely for office cleaning, you may want to consider enlisting the help of a commercial cleaning company.

Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies should always be clearly labeled and kept away in spill-proof containers. They should be taken out only for office cleaning purposes. Otherwise, they should be stored in an above-counter location that is not easily accessible to young visitors. Be sure to have the number for your local poison control center clearly displayed near these products.

Food Items

When not properly kept, break rooms and canteen areas can be breeding grounds for bacteria and germs. Here are some things to watch out for in these areas:
  • Waste:

Allowing garbage, dirt and grime to accumulate can pose a serious health risk. Always be sure that you have adequate waste receptacles in lounge, kitchen and break areas.

  • Kitchens:

Kitchen surfaces and floors should be cleaned regularly. Spills should be promptly addressed by cleaning the floor and placing a wet floor sign. Failure to do so can result in injuries.

  • Refrigerators:

Refrigerators should be cleaned out at least once a week. If your office is open Monday through Friday, you may want to do the cleaning on Friday afternoons.

Keeping your office clean is a great way to promote a safe work environment. If maintaining your office becomes too large of a task, you may want to consider hiring a commercial cleaning company to help. A clean, safe workplace is well worth the investment.

Time to Think about Time

This is a guest post by Isabella . The Millennium Bug seems like a long, distant memory, but in the late 1990s, the Y2K bug was sending fear and panic among network administrators, governments and businesses alike. Cash machines were expected to start dishing out dollars like fruit machines, high interest current accounts would empty, planes would fall from the sky and the world was going to plunge back into the dark ages, as every computer system failed. Okay, things didn’t seem to work out to be that bad. Few if any major computer meltdowns occurred, and the world moved on. The threat of the Millennium Bug was quite simply caused by a lack of foresight by computer manufacturers and programmers. Many computer programs only bothered to store the year in two decimal places, which meant that come the year 2000, a lot of timestamps would go from 99 to 00, essentially making the computer believe it was the year 1900. The debate was never settled whether the Y2K bug was just a damp sq...

Company Takes on Social Media Background Checks for You

There was a day and age where job applicants only had to concern themselves with what was on their resumes and pretty much nothing else. In today's Internet age, however, social media is a big factor and is becoming even bigger as people look for work in the challenging economy. Whether it is what one perceives as an innocent picture or comment that was meant in jest, what individuals say on their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ accounts, and other social media sites is being more closely monitored. According to one CareerBuilder survey of approximately 2,000 hiring managers and human resources professionals, 37% of HR managers reported using social media sites to attain more information on prospective candidates as part of the background checks process. Meanwhile, another 11% said they would be doing likewise soon. For those businesses that may just be starting out or have been around for a while but are newer to social media, social media background checks need to be d...
