Tadoba Abdhari Tiger Reserve is the largest national park in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The name of the reserve has derived from God worshipped by the local tribes also known as Tadoba. Since the river Andhari, meanders through the region, it has also been adopted to name the tiger reserve. This reserve sprawls over an area of 645.4 squares kilometers. The tiger reserve includes the national park and the wildlife sanctuary of the same name. According to the latest census for tigers held in 2012, there are approximately 43 tigers in the core area and in the buffer area there are 22 striped cats.

Location of the reserve

The Tadoba tiger reserve is known for its wide bio diversity and was once known for a favorite hunting ground. But, after the formation of wildlife sanctuary, it has been completely stopped. In the last couple of years, there has been a surge in the tourists visiting this tiger reserve, which is also known as the Jewel of Vidarbha. The park is located in the Chandrapur district of the state of Maharashtra. The nearest international airport is at Nagpur, which is about 140 kilometer from the reserve. Chandrapur is the nearest railway station in the Delhi Chennai rail route.

Avail trained guides

While planning a safari, you can start your journey from these points. It is advisable that you book the safari well in advance, to get a nice accommodation in the vicinity of the reserve. In Tadoba tiger reserve, main attraction is that of a jungle safari in open top gypsies. There are trained local guides, who can accompany the visitors in these trips. It is mandatory to take a guide in each of the vehicles. There are few regulations that you need to follow when in the tiger reserve. Timings of the reserve

Tadoba is open all through the year. But, if you want to view the big cats and other mammals, reptiles and birds, then the best time is in between February and May. May is considered to be the hottest time of the year, and the temperature is quiet high. Since, the vegetation is low in during this time of the year, you easily spot the animals near the water bodies. Among the must see places of the reserve are the machans. They are located near the Panchadhara waterhole, Vasanta Bhandara waterhole, two waterholes near Tadoba Lake and one near Jamunbadi. You can also trek to these waterholes.

Diverse wildlife found

The Tadoba tiger reserve opens at 6 am in the morning till 6 in the evening. In the mornings, tourists are allowed to stay for four hours and in the evening they are allowed to stay for three hours or so. Private vehicles are not allowed to enter through some gates in the monsoon, especially near the waterholes. The reserve is surrounded by Chimur Hills, Mohurli and Kolsa Hills. The diverse topography of the reserve makes it fit to home different species of flora and fauna. It is predominately a dry deciduous forest and teak and bamboo are found in abundance. Among the few noted species of fauna are butterflies, spiders, birds, and insects. You can also have a glimpse of crocodiles, Indian Python, Russel’s viper and Indian cobra.

A plethora of resorts are there in the vicinity of the reserve. Both private and government properties are available, and you can choose a one that will suit your pocket. There are bush camps, guesthouse, and suites for the convenience of the tourists. These establishments are eco-friendly and make sure that they do not affect the environment.
