Five Tips for Cleaning up After Pets

Pets are some of the best things that can happen to you, as well as the worst. You will find that in many cases, the issues surrounding pets will be down to hair, smells and particular stains from them deciding that the living room is a toilet. Whilst you may well have ways in which you generally deal with this, you could also have a look over the following ideas as to how to sort such things out easily and efficiently.

Hair

Getting rid of pet hair is a nightmare. If your dog is malting, or your cat seems to leave a trail of fluff wherever they go, then you will be after a quick and easy solution to the problem. Unfortunately, the only solution that fits those categories is getting rid of the pet in the first place. You will find that may people swear by different methods, but in all eventualities, the best course of action tends to be to simply vacuum more regularly, focusing on the problem areas. The vacuum will take up a certain mount of hair, but on upholstery and carpets, the hair will get caught in the fibers, and will be a fair bit harder to remove. You will find that for this, you can use a lint roller, or just wrap packing tape around your hand with the sticky side facing outwards. The tape will stick to the hairs as you run your hand across the affected surfaces, which should make for easy cleaning. Simply replace the tape when it is no longer sticky, though remember to use both sides of your hand.

Smells

Smells are a difficult one as well, and you will find that the best way to get rid of pet smells is to either clean out their cages and tanks regularly, or to wash the carpets and upholstery more regularly, if that is what is trapping the smells. Dogs are particularly bad for leaving smells behind them on the sofa or the carpet, so be sure to shampoo the carpet regularly, and to have the upholstery washed. You may find that it is worth getting covers for the items that the pets sit or sleep on, as then the cover can be removed and washed easily, saving you a lot of hassle. If the smells remain after having cleaned thoroughly, you should look in to odor neutralizers. You can but many sprays that will help, but often sprinkling the area with baking soda or leaving a bowl full of vinegar in the room over night will absorb the smells effectively. Be sure to remove these things before the pets get at them though!

Stains

Fecal and urine stains are common in the house if you have untrained pets, and it is essential that you know how to solve these things if they are becoming an issue. For hard surface, you simply need to mop them up with a disposable cloth, and then mop the area, but for carpets, the issue is likely more difficult. Be sure to scrape up as much of the stain as you can without spreading it, and then scrub the area with carpet shampoo in order to rid the area of the stain completely. Sometimes a dried In stain will not budge, and you need to get a professional in to dry clean or steam clean the area itself, as this is the only way to get rid of it some times!
