Distribution Of Annual Rainfall Of India & Indian States

India a big country with different climate regions. Though India can be classified as tropical monsoon country, in different sates we can see different climate and different rate of rainfall. This article is strictly focusing on the annual rainfall in allover India and annual rainfall in different Indian states. The annual rainfall of India is about 1180 mm. Though it is a good stats different Indian states receive different annual rainfall. Depending on the average rainfall receiving, India is divided in to 4 regions. They are:

1. Areas of very high rainfall
2. Areas of high rainfall
3. Areas of low rainfall
4. Areas of very low rainfall

Indian States fall in Annual Rainfall Regions

Let us see which all areas and Indian states fall in to these regions.

  1. Areas of very high rainfall:

    Areas of very high rainfall includes regions with 2000 mm or above rainfall annually. West coast (Trivandrum to South Mumbai), Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal PRadesh, Sikkim, Certain areas in Manipur, Tripura and North-eastern tip of West Bengal.

  2. Areas of high rainfall:

    Any areas receive annual rainfall between 1000 mm to 2000 mm can be put under Areas of high rainfall. Indian states fall in this category are Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, major parts of northern plain and eastern slops of Western Ghats.

  3. Areas of low rainfall:

    Areas of low rainfall includes regions with annual rainfall between 500 mm to 1000 mm. They include large parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, western Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, eastern Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Parts of Uttar Pradesh.

  4. Areas of very low rainfall:

    If a region receives less than 500 mm annual rainfall, we can list that region under areas of very low rainfall. They include large parts of Western Rajasthan, Kachchh and Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
