Choosing a phone for web browsing

This is a guest post by Simon about important points we need to check while choosing a Phone for Web browsing. For those that look for browsing over everything else from their phone there are a number of things to consider when purchasing a new handset. Connection speed, the screen size for browsing and the quality and accuracy of the touch on the screen are all very important, as is the processing power and the GPU – this ensures the images look top notch. Also for some people sound is a major factor and a number of phones are now coming with Dolby. This all leads to a top notch internet browsing experience and one that will satisfy the biggest junkies.

Currently a number of phones on the market have dual core processors, leading to superfast processing power; many of these also have excellent GPU’s for graphics. This all enhances the experience of the user.

Large screens like those on the Desire HD and Sensation, Samsung Galaxy SII and Motorola Atrix are excellent for browsing with and give an extra element for those who want to surf the net. Couple this with the high resolution of 540x960 (qHD) for the Atrix and Sensation and you have an unrivalled visual experience.

Connection speed is also very important and this is down to the network provider just as much as the phone. Three Mobile offers a large data allowance and has quite fast 3G connectivity so it’s always worth looking into. HSDPA 3G data connections come in a variety of speeds and this can have a bearing on the type of internet activity you may doing (watching videos on YouTube for example is going to require fast 3G to avoid frustration).

Many cities now have Wi-Fi hotspots and although these may not be on offer in smaller towns and rural areas just yet it can be an excellent idea to get a phone with good Wi-Fi connectivity. This can allow you to connect to the internet through an existing wireless connection rather than being charged for browsing on your phone network.

Some will find emails of huge importance to them and in that case a full QWERTY keyboard will be of the utmost importance. This means they will possibly look into purchasing a BlackBerry or phones with sliding QWERTY keyboards like the Motorola Milestone 2. Also for those who feel Facebook is their calling, there are a number of phones orientated towards serving them also, most notably the HTC Chacha and Salsa or a number of phones from INQ including the recent Cloud Touch and Cloud Q.

Dolby is also available on a number of HTC and Sony Ericsson phones and this leads to a better quality of sound and for those that enjoy streaming this can be a central factor in choosing a device.

The Internet browsing experience on mobile has come on a long way since the days of WAP phones, so decide on the sort of browser you are and you’re sure to find one that suits you.
